Category: J.C. Ryle

John Charles Ryle (1816–1900) was an evangelical Anglican and the first Bishop of Liverpool. He wrote for ordinary readers on purpose, in short sentences and plain words, and his books on holiness and the Gospels have never gone out of print. Ryle is direct and plain and clear as light: he names sin clearly and then sets Christ before you just as clearly. The quotes below come mostly from Holiness, Practical Religion and his Expository Thoughts on the Gospels.
