“I am” by G.K. Chesterton

“When a newspaper posed the question, ‘What’s Wrong with the World?’ the Catholic thinker G. K. Chesterton reputedly wrote a brief letter in response:

‘Dear Sirs:

I am.

Sincerely Yours,

G. K. Chesterton.’

That is the attitude of someone who has grasped the message of Jesus.”

–Timothy Keller, The Prodigal God (New York: Dutton, 2008), 46.

I love this story. But I’m curious as to the actuality of it. Other sources can’t seem to verify it. I’d be delighted to discover that GKC actually wrote the letter to an actually newspaper with those contents.

    • Whether he wrote it or not, or whether it occurred as stated misses the point of it.

    • As has been brought out in other websites, this account is widely referenced, but never accredited to any other author or commentator but GKC. Further, the account is perfectly in keeping with his general style of op-ed. I too would like to see the actual article, but in lieu of proof, I see no compelling reason to doubt the authenticity of the account.
