‘God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved;
God will help her when morning dawns.’ (Psalm 46:5)
“The pillars of the created order may be moved, shaken, toppled (Ps. 46:2), but those who are in the church of Christ know that in Christ God is in the midst of her and that therefore she shall not be moved.
The God whom we declare to be ‘a very present help’ (46:1) will help her and will do so when morning dawns. ‘Let there be light,’ said the Creator, and ever since, light has been a symbol of hope.
In the context of Isaiah’s prophecy of Immanuel, the wicked who have ‘no dawn’ (Isa. 8:20) are contrasted with those in Galilee who will see a great light shine when Christ comes (Isa. 9:1–2).
When Christ came in His incarnation and earthly ministry, the sun rose (cf. Luke 1:78–79, also echoing Mal. 4:2). When He rose from the dead, the Easter Sunday sun rose.
And as we await our bodily resurrection, we look forward to waking up on that brightest of all bright mornings (cf. Ps. 17:15; Isa. 26:19; Dan. 12:3).”
