“I thirst.” –John 19:28
“There is living water for you because Jesus thirsted. There is life for you because Jesus died.
Oh that the sight might be seen of Jesus beside you, meeting you, saving, satisfying your soul, as he met and satisfied and saved the woman of Sychar by Jacob’s well!
Ah, my fellow-sinner! If thou knewest the gift of God— if thou wilt but know now, that Jesus, God’s own Son, given for you, thirsted on Calvary’s bitter tree, thirsted for thy sake, thirsted for thee, thou wilt ask of him, and he will give thee living water’ (John 4:10).
Oh that the same voice might be heard by some hearts now which fell on the ears of a careless multitude on the last, the great day of the feast, when he who was so soon to thirst on Calvary, ‘stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me and drink’ (John 7:37).
What should hinder? What should prevent the blessing, when Divine Love has given the Eternal Son, and Incarnate Love has wept and bled, and thirsted, and died, and from his throne in glory the same Jesus lifts his voice in words now written on the Bible’s closing page:
‘I, Jesus, have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star. And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come; and whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely’ (Revelation 22:16-17).”
